The concept of smart metering is firmly on the government’s energy agenda. Global issues relating to climate change and energy starvation will ensure that the political and public profile of smart metering technology will continue to rise in the UK.

The benefits of Smart Metering are far reaching for both the energy companies and their customers.

The implementation of smart metering will improve meter data quality, including readings, and as a result more accurate bills will be produced by Energy Retailers leading to fewer customer queries. Retailer meter reading costs will also be reduced as manual reads are replaced by automated readings. Smart metering will also provide benefits to Energy Retailers in the areas of revenue protection and customer debt. In addition smart metering will also facilitate the introduction of more sophisticated tariffs, such as “Time of Day” pricing.

As well as providing accurate energy bills smart metering enables Customers to better manage their energy usage and more sophisticated tariffs will provide potential for cost reductions based on time of use. Energy management information will aid reductions of energy consumption thereby reducing the customer’s carbon footprint.

Generis Technology is working in partnership with meter manufacturers, energy retailers and software vendors to establish smart metering requirements in order to deliver end-to-end smart metering solutions covering both gas and electricity.

Our solutions, aimed at Energy Retailers, Meter Operators and Data Collections, will allow old and new world metering technology to run concurrently.

There will be minimal impact on existing back office systems such as billing and meter job administration.

The approach will:
•   minimise the initial investment costs;
•   protect existing investment;
•   eliminate the need to run parallel systems; and
•   enable the introduction of smart metering at a pace chosen by the
    market and energy companies.
