Successful implementation of the British Gas Trading, Meter Asset Database (MDB)

With the introduction of deregulation into U.K. Gas Metering, and the opening up of the market to competition, British Gas Trading went out to tender in December 2000 for an I.T. solution in support of it’s gas metering business requirements.

Generis Technology Ltd was successful in winning the contract to build the required solution in March 2001.

MDB now acts as the repository for all of British Gas Trading’s meter asset data (13 million domestic gas meters). The system receives updates from, and sends updates to, the appropriate industry participants as well as internal British Gas Trading systems.

A key aspect of MDB is the ability to configure rules that determine the behaviour of the system whilst processing both incoming and out going dataflows.

The design and development of the system from conception through to successful implementation during December 2001 has been an outstanding achievement and success.

Working with British Gas Trading and other partners, Generis Technology has again proved its ability to deliver innovative and complex solutions on time and within budget.

Dave Paton, Programme Manager for British Gas Trading recalls, "the biggest obstacle to realising the benefits achievable from gas metering deregulation was the lack of an obvious package solution both to support our associated business requirements and to cope with the ever fluid and evolving Gas Data Transfer Catalogue. The solution that Generis proposed was innovative, pragmatic and addressed both the key areas I have described. We had worked previously with Generis and were confident in their ability to deliver what was required. The delivered solution is an outstanding achievement and we are delighted with the outcome and have nothing but praise for the efforts of our own staff, our partners, and of course Generis in the successful completion of this challenging project".
